Find all the trailers here, or read about some of the highlights below.  Continue reading “Trailer touchdown: Best movie teasers from the Super Bowl” »

Lights, camera, action! Thoughts on the 2017 Oscar nominations

It’s that time of year again! Hollywood’s awards season is in full force, with the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and more already passing out their trophies. However, the Holy Grail of Hollywood awards remains the Oscars. Although we’ll have to wait until Feb. 26 to find out who takes home the coveted Academy Awards for best picture, best director and more, speculation on the front-runners has already begun, following the recent nominations.

Last year the Oscars generated controversy for the lack of diversity in the list of nominees. Thankfully, the Academy listened to that criticism and added more diversity to their membership. This year’s list of nominees includes a much more diverse grouping. Continue reading “Lights, camera, action! Thoughts on the 2017 Oscar nominations” »

2016 summer movie preview

X-Men-Apocalypse-Poster-No-Text.0.0By Ashley Pauls

It’s that time of year again — summer blockbuster season is here! Summer is typically my favorite time of the year at the movie theater, because it tends to bring more science fiction and superhero films, my two favorite genres. This year, however, my “must see” list seems to be a little smaller than normal. There definitely are some really big and really exciting movies coming up, but there just don’t seem to be as many that made me think, “Wow, I’ve got to pre-order my ticket for this right now!” It could be that overall, this year’s offerings aren’t quite as strong as years past, or it could simply be that studios are moving some of their big-ticket items to other parts of the year (but more on that later)… Continue reading “2016 summer movie preview” »

2016 movie preview: My top five most anticipated films

Captain-America-Civil-War-TeamsBy Ashley Pauls/Box Office Buzz

It’s going to be hard to top “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” from 2015, but there are still a number of interesting movies coming in 2016 (hey, I’m going to need something to tide me over until Episode VIII in 2017!). 😉 Here’s the top five movies I’m most looking forward to this year, in order of their release dates: Continue reading “2016 movie preview: My top five most anticipated films” »

Another summer movie season has come and gone, but there are plenty of movies to look forward to in this year’s fall/winter line-up, including a Bond film, the final chapter in the Hunger Games series and a certain little science fiction film directed by J.J. Abrams. Here are the five films I’m most looking forward to this fall and winter. Let me know what films you’re most excited about, as well! Continue reading “Fall/winter 2015 movie preview” »

After ‘Age of Ultron’ and ‘Ant-Man’: What’s next for Marvel?

By Ashley Pauls
Box Office Buzz

civil-war2014 turned out to be an impressive year for Marvel. First, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” impressed both audiences and critics with its political thriller plot and truly game-changing revelation for the Marvel universe: the downfall of S.H.I.E.L.D. Then, despite some initial skepticism about how well it would play to general audiences, “Guardians of the Galaxy” — a quirky sci-f film starring Marvel D-list characters — became the highest-grossing movie of the year, turned Chris Pratt into a buzzed-about movie star, and made us all fall in love with a walking tree and a talking raccoon.

However, the sailing hasn’t been quite as smooth for Marvel this year. Although “Age of Ultron” made plenty of money, most fans seem to agree it didn’t completely live up to its potential. Marvel’s origin film “Ant-Man” turned out to be a very fun — and funny — movie, but it didn’t bring in as many dollars as Marvel’s previous offerings. So, what does this all mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and where is Marvel headed in the future? Continue reading “After ‘Age of Ultron’ and ‘Ant-Man’: What’s next for Marvel?” »

Comic-Con highlights: What upcoming movies are getting the most buzz?

By Ashley Pauls
Box Office Buzz

batman_v_superman_dawn_of_justice___trinity_poster_by_lamboman7-d7sesunI’ve never been to Comic-Con in San Diego, but as a sci-fi and superhero movie buff, it remains on my bucket list. However, since I’m not able to go in person, I always appreciate Entertainment Weekly’s annual Comic-Con issue, which gives readers a sneak peek at some of the cool stuff appearing at Comic-Con. In what will come as a surprise to no one 😉 the section of the magazine I was most excited about was the information on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” There’s a lot of pressure riding on this movie. “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” is my all-time favorite movie, and I really, REALLY want “The Force Awakens” to rank up there with that film.

I really like what we’ve seen so far. The trailers have been great (admit it—what fan didn’t tear up a little at that first shot of Han Solo and Chewbacca in the Millennium Falcon when Han announces, “Chewie, we’re home”?). I also enjoyed the short behind-the-scenes video released at Comic-Con, especially seeing Carrie Fisher return as Princess Leia. “The Force Awakens” appears to capture the magic of the original trilogy while also taking the franchise in a new direction. Of course it’s way too soon to call it, but I’ve got a good feeling about this one. Continue reading “Comic-Con highlights: What upcoming movies are getting the most buzz?” »

2015 summer movie preview

avengers-marvel

It’s that time of year again—summer blockbuster season is here, the time when superheroes and sci-fi movies rule the box office. So far, 2015 has gotten off to a bit of a slow start movie-wise; I’ve actually only been to see one 2015 movie, “Cinderella,” in theaters so far, and though a few movies piqued my interest, I felt like I could just wait to rent them. That’s about to change, with one of the year’s most anticipated movies, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” kicking off the summer movie season. Here’s a few of the highlights from this summer’s group of films:

Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1)

This is my most anticipated movie of the summer and my overall second most anticipated movie this year (the top honor goes to a certain little J.J. Abrams film coming out in December). 😉 I’ve watched the trailers that have been released but have purposefully tried to avoid finding out much about the plot, since I’d like to be surprised. Director Joss Whedon is likely going to take the characters to a darker place this time around, and they’ll have to face a challenge of their own making: an artificially intelligent robot named Ultron who decides to unleash his own brand of justice on the world. It will be challenging to top “The Avengers,” but Marvel has proven it can successfully keep one-upping itself (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” etc.).
